Lars Tiffany

A native of Lafayette, N.Y., Lars Tiffany graduated from Lafayette High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and lacrosse. Following high school, Lars went on to Brown University where he graduated in 1990.

At Brown, Lars was a two-time team captain and starter on defense for three years. He played for former Virginia head coach Dom Starsia at Brown. He was Co- MVP of the Brown squad that captured its first-ever NCAA playoff victory in 1990 and capped his collegiate career by playing in the North-South Senior All-Star game. Upon graduation from Brown, he taught high school biology and coached lacrosse and football in Pebble Beach, Calif., from 1990-94.

Lars began his collegiate coaching career at LeMoyne College, where he served as an assistant coach of men’s lacrosse and co-head coach of the women’s lacrosse program. Following coaching stints at LeMoyne, Dartmouth (two years, under head coach Rick Sowell as an asst. coach and defensive coordinator), Penn State (four years as the top assistant under head coach Glenn Thiel and was involved in all facets of the lacrosse program as the team’s defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator) and Washington & Lee, Lars was hired to head up the men’s lacrosse program at S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook in 2005.

Tiffany came to Brown from Stony Brook, where he was the head lacrosse coach in 2005 and 2006, posting an overall mark of 18-13. In 2005 he was named America East Coach of the Year. Lars returned Brown University to national prominence with Ivy League regular-season titles in 2008, 2010, 2015, and 2016 and NCAA Championship berths in 2009, 2015, and 2016. He was named the New England Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2015, and 2016 and earned Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2015 and 2016.

Tiffany came to Virginia in 2017 following 10 years at his alma mater. “Stepping into the seat as the head coach of Virginia’s Men’s Lacrosse program brings both a tremendous exhilaration and responsibility,” Tiffany said. “I am very fortunate to have been entrusted with this program. It is also clearly understood that the coaches and athletes of Virginia Lacrosse that have come before me have established a very high bar for measuring success in Charlottesville. My staff and I are eager to begin working with the men as we establish the principles and guidelines of our aggressive, fast-paced system of play that relies upon uncompromising fitness, competitive fire, and a passion and joy for the game of lacrosse.”

The 2019 season was a special one for Tiffany as he brought both NCAA and ACC titles to Charlottesville. Virginia tied a program record with 17 wins in 2019 as the Cavs finished 17-3, winning their first NCAA title since 2011 and first ACC title since 2010. In his 3 seasons at the UVA Lars has compiled a record of 37-16 and holds a career record of 150-85. A highlight of Lars’ career was being named Asst. Coach for the Iroquois National team for the FIL World Championships in Israel in 2018.

Lars is the Son of Brad Tiffany and Faith Corwin who donated 11 Buffalo to the Onondaga Nation in 1973. The herd thrives today!
