He was named All-League, All-North, All-Central New York, and an All-American attackman. While in high school Kenny was a back-to-back gold medalist for the Central Empire State lacrosse team. He was named MVP of the US Scholastic Lacrosse All-American game as a high school senior.
Following his graduation from Watertown high school in 2005, he was a highly sought-after recruit having been ranked as the number 3 incoming recruit by “Inside Lacrosse”.
Syracuse University won the recruiting battle as Kenny enrolled as a freshman in the fall of 2005. It wasn’t much of a battle as Kenny had decided early on to follow in his father Tom’s footsteps and play lacrosse at Syracuse. His father was a two-time All-American in the goal and led SU to its first NCAA Lacrosse Championship in 1983. At Syracuse Kenny was also a two-time All-American, earning 1st team honors as a senior in 2009. As a senior captain, Kenny was ranked 2nd nationally in points per game (4.11) and 4th nationally in assists per game (2.6). He was an outstanding member of 2 Syracuse University NCAA National Championship teams in 2008 and again in 2009. In his senior year at Syracuse, Nims was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team as well as being named the most outstanding player of the Final Four tournament that year.
Upon graduation from Syracuse University, Nims was selected as the 1st overall draft pick in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) draft. During his professional career, he was named an MLL All-Star.
In 2016 Kenny’s father Tom was inducted posthumously into the Upstate Lacrosse Hall of Fame. This evening, three years later, Kenny continues to follow in his father’s footsteps by also being inducted into the Upstate Lacrosse Foundation’s Hall of Fame.
Kenny is the son of the late Tom Nims and Julie Nims Korwek, and the stepson of Alex Korwek. He currently resides in Clayton, NY where he helps coach the Thousand Islands school’s modified lacrosse team. He enjoys spending his time with family and friends in the Thousand Islands.
