Athlete, coach, official. James J. (Jim) Luchsinger excelled as an achiever in all three phases of his life in sports.
In high school, Jim played basketball, baseball, and – of course – lacrosse.
At Cortland State, he extended his athletic career on the basketball court for four years, and on the lacrosse field as a player on the 1972 USILA national champions and the 1974 semifinalist team.
Jim’s lacrosse coaching resume includes seasons as an assistant coach at Cortland (1974 -75), Homer High School (1978 – 82) (1985 – 88). He also coached varsity football, basketball and softball at Oyster Bay High School and was offensive coordinator for Cornell Sprint Football teams (1992 – 2002). At Homer, Jim coached five future All-Americans.
The Luchsinger officiating bio is equally as impressive. From 1983 to 1985, he was a top high school hoops official. From 1989 to 2005 he called dozens of college games on every level.
Jim officiated high school lacrosse from 1988 to 2005, from intersectional to state title games. From 1992 to 2003, he worked the college contests, including NCAA playoffs and the 2003 National Championship Game. He also reffed Major League Lacrosse (MLL) from 2002 to 2005.
And don’t forget Jim’s role as a physical education teacher at Oyster Bay and Homer. Jim was a graduate of Alfred Berner High School, Nassau Community College, and Cortland State IBS and MS degrees)
So there you are: athlete, coach, official, AND teacher.
